Sam is a very old dog.
He has some physical problems. He can’t do a traditional doggie “Sit” or squat to poop because he has so much arthritis in his hips.
Steps are a challenge.
His eyesight is not what it once was.
Yet Sam continues to enjoy his life.
His favorite pastime is sacking out on the sofa because it is just the right height.
He also likes to watch Animal Planet and hang out with his buds in the computer room.
He has many friends.
Happy hour is a time for reconnecting.
He is surrounded by loving family and a supportive community.
Sam is a venerable old guy who has earned the right to be comfortable in his old age. Those who love him make sure he has treats, good nutrition, mental stimulation, and social networks.
Don’t you hope someone does that for you when you, too, are old and venerable?

Lovely!
They say a dog’s life is best! Seems to be the truth!
It was a real privledge to spend time with Sam. Sometimes a creature’s dignity transcends species. Just standing next too him made me feel more grounded. I can’t really describe the feeling. A sort of spiritual connection and enlightenment. I kept wanting to cry, but it was not from sadness. Just felt profoundly moved by him.
This story touched me deeply as I so love old dogs. They are venerable, wise, dignified and such pleasurable companions. I totally get how meeting and spending time with Sam was a grounding and moving experience for you, Katherine.
I have been blessed to share with my life with a number of old dogs!
Linda–So glad you saw this. Your work through The Senior Source, like ElderAuthority, recognizes the importance of respecting aging in whatever form we find it.
What a great soul. A wise old dog.
Pam–Yes, a very special being. I hope I can age with as much dignity.
We saw Sam several times during his walk in front of the house but thought you or Dave had asked for a pony for Christmas and got him instead. Excellent addition to the neighborhood as I feel a lot of his pains.
