“Age Strong” Fights Ageism with Humor and Social Media

ElderAuthority is always challenging its readers to come up with “Better Ideas for Aging.”  Here is a really fantastic “Better Idea.”
Age Strong – Respecting Seniors is Respecting Yourself is a message that a group of 15 high school students and 12 older adults developed to tackle the issue of ageism and elder abuse in Guelph, Wellington, Ontario. With a grant from the Government of Canada New Horizons for Seniors Program, this project took a social… More

APPLE CARE & COMPANION: CARE AT HOME SERVICES

AN AGENCY THAT CARES FOR AND ABOUT  ITS CAREGIVERS
Apple Care & Companion is a non-medical homecare agency that serves Collin, Dallas, Denton, Rockwall and Tarrant counties in  North Texas.  They are licensed through the Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) in the State of Texas.
There are many caregiving agencies out there, but this one is pretty special.  When I look for key differentiators between caregiving agencies, I research the experience… More

A+ HOME ELDERLY CARE ADVICE (video)

The following video about providing eldercare from home is absolutely excellent!  There is nothing in it that I would change.  NBC Digital Health Network has created five minutes of practical, useful information without ever lapsing into an infomercial.
    Key points bear repeating.
    CAREGIVING IS SERIOUS WORK

The family member who becomes the primary caregiver takes on serious responsibilities.
Caregiving requires patience, planning, and practice.
    The most successful… More

    UNDERSTANDING GUARDIANSHIP IN TEXAS–Part I

Listen up folks.  This is an important article about something we all need to understand, even if guardianship is not even on your radar.
I wrote an article about Guardianship Basics for my ElderAuthority blog about a month ago.  Not knowing much about guardianship, I did enough research to be confident about my content; however, I also realized how little I understood this complex topic and its related issues.

    GUARDIANSHIP PROCESS
In my eternal search for answers about all… More

The Art of Living in the Present

During the January ice storms I ended up with 17 broken pipes between my house and my rental five-plex next door.  It has been a bit intense getting everything repaired, plus taking the steps to prevent a repeat disaster next time it gets cold.  The big surprise is that we seem to be addressing things day by day while maintaining our sense of perspective.
The older I get the more I value living in the present.  It is amazing how much stress is eliminated when I just take care… More

    Treasuring the Present

    Reading Time: 2 – 3 minutes

I struggle to focus on one topic to blog about this week, so I am going to just write whatever comes to mind.
When I see commercials about products that promise to keep me young, I just find them silly.  It is one thing to pay sensible attention to health, nutrition, mental nimbleness, social networks, and the other factors that help our bodies and souls function healthily.  It is quite another to want to remove lines of experience from our… More

Better Ways to Teach Planning for Eldercare and Aging?

    Reading Time: 2 -3 minutes

Last week I taught one of my half-day introductory classes on eldercare planning at a local church.  There were about 20 people in the class.  I was pleased that there were several family groups that attended together.
The problem with teaching this class is that there is not enough time to cover all the topics well, even at the introductory level.  I try to supplement the teaching with handouts that can be read and used once the student leaves the class. … More

    Aging and Denial

    Reading Time: 2 – 3 minutes
I must be missing something really big about the upcoming aging of 78 million Baby Boomers.  I cannot read a newspaper or listen to a radio or television broadcast without having another idea for empowered aging pop up in my head.  To me there are so many ways for us to plan for better aging options than there have been in the past.  Since I write a blog about it, I suspect I am a bit more focused on the topic than many.  The way I see it, it is everyone’s… More

The New Elder’s Blog: A Repository of Better Ideas for Aging

    Reading Time: 1 minute
The goal of The New Elder’s Blog is to build a community that will wrestle with difficult issues related to aging and develop better ways of dealing with the challenges that may arise. Each person’s experience is different, so there is no cookie cutter manual for any of us. It is my wish that we build a repository of ideas and experiences available for access by anyone in a time of need.
I envision being able to search the catalog with key words… More
