Every Day is Valentine’s Day for In Home Caregivers

    We Are All Caregivers
Today is Valentines Day.  For most of my life it was one of my least favorite holidays because most of my significant others would either ignore it or panic under the pressure.   I felt guilty for wanting some acknowledgement of feeling.  I envied friends who received flowers, jewelry, and chocolates on Valentines Day. In my older age I have learned to recognize and show love no matter what day it is.  It is one of the best things about aging.

ELDER CARE INDUSTRY: 90+ AGE GROUP TRIPLES

One of the biggest issues facing the elder care (eldercare) industry is that we’re all hanging around longer.  The over-90 age group now numbers almost 2 million – triple the number just 30 years ago.
    MONEY AND HEALTH TAKE PRIORITY
Unfortunately, all is not rosy for many in that age category.  Many have outlived whatever savings they might have put together, and because their incomes were lower during their working years compared to today, pensions and benefits often… More

    ELDERLY CARE VOCABULARY

Most people stumble into caregiving.  Few plan for it.  Consequently, everything feels new when you are getting started.  I know I stumbled over vocabulary for the first year I was a caregiver.
SeniorsZen.com is a website that provides information for various kinds of local senior housing in Canada.   They provide some useful videos on YouTube.com, but this post gives them credit for some of the vocabulary words of caregiving and elderly care.   They have done a good… More

    CONTINUUM OF CARE DEFINITION

In sifting through information related to aging, we find ourselves struggling with too much information, rather than too little. This is certainly the case when it comes to senior housing. One of the terms that crops up is continuum of care. The continuum of care definition is confusing because it means different things in different contexts.

    PRIMARY CAREGIVER

When a loved one is in need of ongoing care and living assistance, someone in the family usually either steps forward or is shoved to the front to assume the role of “primary caregiver”.  Typically, that person is a daughter or daughter-in-law.  Studies have shown that if you’re older, retired and in need of assistance and don’t have a woman of this nature in your life, you’re in trouble.  That led a dear friend of mine to launch an elder care consulting business named… More
